God can do anything that can be done. Can God create a rock to big that he cannot lift it? This question is a paradox. God can lift any rock that is ever created and God can always create a bigger rock. There is no end to God’s power, but there are certain things that are not possible. For example:
- God cannot create a 2-sided triangle or a 3-sided square.
- God cannot create a married bachelor.
- According to Scripture: God cannot lie. (Heb 6:18, Titus 1:2) Or put differently – Every word of God is true. (Prov 30:5, John 17:17)
- According to Scripture: God cannot increase or diminish in knowledge. – He cannot learn something new or forget anything he knows. (1 John 3:20)
- According to Scripture: God cannot not fear anything (1 John 4:8, 18
- According to Scripture: God cannot leave or forsake his Children. (Deut 31:6, Heb 13:5-6)
- According to Scripture: God cannot change. (Malachi 3:6)
- According to Scripture: God cannot break his covenants. (Ps 89:34)
All of these things that God cannot do give us comfort. We can be assured that God will not lie because he cannot lie. We can trust His word. We have comfort in that God cannot – and will not – forsake His children. We can trust God and the plan he has for our lives. If He has promised us eternal life, we can be confident in his promise because His word is true.
